Red Light Cameras Reduce Traffic Accidents

November 27, 2013

Government studies estimate that about 800 people are killed each year from running red lights and another 200,000 are injured. In a survey done by Old Dominion University, one out of three people know someone who has been injured or killed in an accident due to red light running. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about one-half of the people killed are not the violators themselves, but rather innocent drivers or pedestrians passing through the intersection.

Between 1992 and 1998, there was an 18% increase in the number of fatal motor vehicle accidents due to drivers running red lights. Most red light runners tend to be younger, less likely to wear a seatbelt, and tend to have a history of traffic violations. In 1982, a highly publicized accident involving a red light runner striking an 18-month-old in a stroller led to the development and widespread implementation of cameras that capture offenders.

The cameras are designed to capture a snapshot of a vehicle as it passes through the intersection after the light has turned red. If caught by the camera, law enforcement officials will examine the photograph, determine if a law has been broken, and mail the ticket to the offending party. If the driver of the vehicle is not the owner, a car accident lawyer may help to investigate who was the driver and whether there is an automobile insurance policy to recover against.

Widespread studies have indicated that red light cameras are effective at reducing traffic accidents at intersections where the cameras are placed.  If you’ve been injured, it’s vital to seek legal counsel from a car accident attorney. A car accident lawyer who practices in this area can inform you of your legal rights and advise you on seeking compensation.

Medical Mistakes Can Be Deadly. Do You Need Representation?

November 13, 2013

A personal injury lawyer is often consulted on medical malpractice cases, especially when they result in a fatality. In 2010 a study indicated that about 180,000 people died due to a preventable medical mistakes. Three years later, a new study done by the the Journal of Patient Safety reported the numbers to be much higher, in the 210,000-440,000 range, making it the third-leading cause of death, right below heart disease and cancer.  Patients who suffer from any sort of malpractice incident along these lines have a one in five chance of dying from resulting complications.

The list of common mistakes that a medical malpractice lawyer sees is quite long and includes surgical accidents (such as cutting an artery), not ordering the proper tests, delaying treatment, and not acting on test results. Additionally, improper patient monitoring, delaying a diagnosis, and the administration of the wrong medication dose or usage can cause complications and lead to tragic results.

The death of 19-month-old Alicia Coleman of Omaha, Nebraska, is an example of what can happen when medical personnel inject medication into the wrong tube. The young girl passed away when medicine that was meant to be administered to a particular site was inadvertently injected into her jugular catheter, sending the medication straight into her bloodstream.

Medical accidents don’t always result in death, however. Sometimes, injuries occur leaving you or your family in a tough emotional situation as well as facing even more medical issues and bills. During these times, a consultation with a personal injury lawyer can be highly beneficial in getting your questions answered, informing you of your rights, and assisting you with seeking justice for your injuries. Pennsylvania Encourages Safe Driving with Young Driver Law

August 20, 2013

In Pennsylvania, young drivers are being issued their drivers licenses only after they complete a program that encourages safe driving habits. The Young Driver Law puts teenagers through a three-step program that helps them improve their skill, experience, and decision-making process when behind the wheel. The law has proven effective in enhancing driver safety among teens, and has lead to a decrease in crashes and automobile related fatalities among 16-17 year-olds.

The law helps teen drivers gain experience, learn how to avoid distractions, and recognize when to reduce speed due to unsafe road conditions, all of which can be primary factors in a car accident. Even though this program puts new drivers through three phases — starting with a Learners Permit, progressing to a Junior License and then finally to an Unrestricted License — it does not guarantee that accidents involving teenagers won’t happen. With car accidents being the leading cause of death among 16-24 year-olds, it’s important to retain the services of a lawyer in the event you or a loved one is struck by another vehicle.

Car accident lawyers can ensure that the rights of drivers, passengers, and their families are protected in the case of a crash. Enlisting the legal services of an attorney can help individuals and families retain compensation to help pay for medical expenses if a person is injured in a motor vehicle accident. If you are the victim of a crash that was caused by another driver or faulty condition, having a lawyer review the case early is important to make sure claims are filed quickly, details are not missed, and damages are collected.

It is never too late to seek the guidance and support of car accident lawyers following an automobile accident. Even if you appear to be fine, it’s wise to consult with a legal professional like the attorneys at The Pearce Law Firm. A lawyer can help you review your options and determine what action to take in order to protect your rights.

Police and medical professionals found the young boy on the ground after responding to a call shortly after 3 p.m. The boy had been riding his bike when he was struck by a Ford Explorer near Lily Street and Wilfred. He was taken to a hospital while in stable condition and treated for an injured leg and broken collarbone. The police are continuing to investigate the accident.

In instances like these, having a car accident attorney on your side can be a valuable asset. By gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses early on, a lawyer will be able to gain insight into what happened and determine how to proceed in order to protect the rights of those involved. Accidents can have devastating consequences, especially for those like the young boy who was outside of a vehicle with limited protection. Enlisting legal support of an attorney can ensure those who are at fault are held accountable.

Pedestrians and bicycle riders tend to suffer extreme injuries when involved in accidents with an automobile. By having legal representation, they can help recover costs related to missed worked, medical expenses, and any rehab and therapy that is necessary. Additionally, a car accident attorney can allow you to focus solely on the recovery process while they handle the paperwork and deal with the insurance companies.

When you or a loved one has been involved in an auto accident that has resulted in an injury, it is important to seek out representation from an auto accident attorney as soon as possible. Rather than attempt to deal with the legal process on your own, let an experienced lawyer provide you with the support you need. The Pearce Law Firm can ensure your rights are protected and that you receive the financial compensation you deserve.

Serious Car-Motorcycle Accident Injures Local Woman

July 30, 2013

According to a local news source, a woman believed to be in her 40s was injured in a serious crash in South Philadelphia in late April. Details of the collision are still unknown, but first responders on the scene found the woman on the roadway with serious injuries. The collision took place between a car and a motorcycle on the 400 block of Oregon Avenue. She was immediately rushed to the nearby Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for emergency healthcare and injury treatment.

Unfortunately, car-motorcycle collisions are all too common. A motorcycle accident lawyer can be helpful in gathering early evidence and protecting the rights of the individuals involved in situations such as this. Many professionals believe that enlisting legal counsel early on is helpful for motor vehicle crashes in which the details of the collision are unclear and especially in cases where it is difficult to determine who is at fault. No one in this situation wants to be held accountable for something that was not their fault.

Motorcyclists tend to suffer from rather dramatic and extreme injuries when involved in a collision. Representation and thorough legal counsel from a motorcycle accident lawyer can help individuals cover costs related to lengthy hospital stays, expensive medical bills, and other expenses. Road laws protect the safety and rights of all drivers, and it is important to ensure that those who are responsible for serious crashes are held accountable for their actions. In the event that you or a loved one are injured in a collision through no fault of your own, it is wise to enlist legal representation from a motorcycle accident lawyer early on in the proceedings in order to protect your rights and maximize compensation or other financial return. Neurological Deficits in the NFL

July 16, 2013

According to ABC, over one third of the National Football League’s former players have joined a lawsuit against the league regarding hits to the head and the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury. Lawyer representation and legal professionals from both sides have valid arguments that debate the amount of personal versus professional responsibility when it comes to neurological deficits. As a huge part of football is the physical part of the game, hits to the head are not only commonplace; they are encouraged and applauded. Former players are now coming forward stating they are experiencing long-term cognitive deficits from these head injuries and blaming the league for lack of information and responsibility.

The brain injury lawyer for the National Football League maintains that it was, and continues to be, the responsibility of individual teams to monitor each player after severe hits to the head. Each team has a physician that is trained in determining when a player is ready to return to play after a concussion or other hard-hitting head blow. In 1994, the NFL even created a committee that was dedicated to evaluating neurological risks associated with mild traumatic head blows and provide information to team physicians. Players maintain that this committee was a “sham” and did not protect football players the way it should have.

Family members and former players continue to present their case with legal representation from  brain injury lawyer professionals. United States District Judge Anita Brody is not expected to deliver her verdict for several months. After that, most experts believe one side or the other will appeal whatever is decided, and as such, the case could take years to be finalized. Litigation is obviously important to both sides in a suit like this due to the highly emotional and personally traumatic nature of the details.
