In 2010, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration ranked Philadelphia County as the number two county in Pennsylvania for motor vehicle fatalities.
Also in Philadelphia County, fatalities from accidents involving large trucks were among the highest in the state. Well-known author and consultant Stephen Covey recently died from complications of a biking accident. Stephen Covey, author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” apparently lost control of his bike during a ride through Utah. While bikers are typically concerned about the dangers posed when they share the road with motorists, Covey’s injuries resulted from losing control of his bike. He was wearing a helmet.

A trucking accident can be traumatizing, but navigating through the aftermath as a victim can be even more emotionally frustrating. In a recent accident in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a vehicle operated by a New Jersey trucking company went careening across an intersection after the brakes failed. In May, the Supreme Court denied certiorari for a Ninth Circuit case where officers of the Seattle police department tasered a pregnant woman. In essence, the Supreme Court decided not to overturn the Ninth Circuit’s determination that the police used excessive force. An unidentified officer from the 17th District was injured when his cruiser hit a parked car on 24th street near Moore Street. The cause for the crash is as of yet unknown. Just a week after this South Philadelphia crash, another officer was dragged two blocks while conducting a traffic stop. The man became aggressive when asked to step out of the car and fled the scene. The officer was listed in stable condition.
